HELOC options for Alabama homeowners

From Birmingham and Hoover to Huntsville, Madison, Montgomery, Mobile, Tuscaloosa, and Auburn, I help Alabama homeowners use their equity in a way that fits the plan, not the other way around.

Check My Rate

The short answer

Can I get a HELOC in Alabama?

Yes. Alabama homeowners can use a HELOC to borrow against equity in a primary residence, second home, or investment property, subject to underwriting review. Your first mortgage and its rate stay in place because the HELOC is a separate second lien. How much you can access depends on your home value, your balance, and the program CLTV limit.

Alabama homeowners use HELOCs for the same reasons I see everywhere: keeping a low first mortgage rate, funding home projects, cleaning up higher-interest debt, or freeing up equity in a rental. The difference is having someone who explains the numbers plainly and stays with you through closing.

I'm licensed in Alabama and this program is built for Alabama properties. Most of the process happens by phone and online. The property valuation and closing are arranged locally, and I'll keep you posted at each step so nothing feels like a mystery.

If you own investment property in Alabama, a HELOC may be one option among several. I can also walk you through DSCR loans and fix-and-flip financing so you can compare them side by side before you decide.

HELOC rates are variable and can change monthly, on the first day of the month, when WSJ Prime changes. The rate is the WSJ Prime index (currently 7.00%) plus a margin that is set at closing based on property type, credit score, and combined loan-to-value, and does not change. For a HELOC, the APR is the index plus the margin and does not include costs other than interest. The APR will never be lower than 4.00% or higher than 18.00%. 3-year draw period with interest-only payments, followed by a 17-year repayment period of principal and interest. At closing you draw at least 75% of your approved line. Closing costs apply, and you will get an itemized estimate before you commit. Rates and terms as of October 23, 2026. Subject to underwriting review.

Alabama HELOC questions

Ask Robyn

Can I get a HELOC on a home anywhere in Alabama?

Primary residences, second homes, and investment properties located in Alabama may qualify, subject to underwriting review and property eligibility. Some property types have extra guidelines. Share the address and property type with me and I will confirm whether it fits the program.

Will an Alabama HELOC change my first mortgage?

No. A HELOC is a second lien, so your first mortgage, its rate, and its payment stay the same. You add a separate line of credit that you can draw from as needed during the draw period.

Is the process different for Alabama homeowners?

The steps are the same: apply or call, review your options, then underwriting, valuation, and closing. Closing documents and recording follow Alabama requirements, and I'll walk you through them so you understand what you're signing.
